About us The Menagerie has been a fixture on Parliament Street for well over three decades. It has evolved from its early days as a local Cabbagetown pet shop into a destination for many from throughout the city and beyond. The Menagerie is a full line pet shop stocking both animals and supplies. We have a small fish section that is well stocked with a wide variety of fish and a very extensive line of supplies. The soon to be finished marine department is going to focus on species suitable for smaller tanks with a number of them being tank bred. The Menagerie has always been known to have a good selection of unique reptiles and this continues today. The majority of our reptiles and amphibians are captive bred, with some even being born in the store! We also have a great selection of bird and small animal supplies including bulk foods, cages, bedding. Our bird department has always been a favourite stop along Parliament St to visit the long time resident parrots Chloe, Junior and Sam as well as to see what’s new in our bird department.     The Menagerie has become a favourite store for dog & cat owners looking for healthy choices for their pets. We stock a good variety of natural source and holistic pet foods including frozen raw diets. We also stock a great selection of supplies for very dog or cat. One of the most favoured parts of the dog & cat departments is the do-it-yourself dog wash. Customers can bring in their pet and use our huge tub with supplied towels and shampoo. We do not sell dogs or cats and encourage those interested to seek out rescues, shelters or to consider a reputable breeder.     History In the early ‘80’s the store moved from the corner of Winchester and Parliament to its present location just to the north on Parliament in a row of Victorian homes. Starting off in the single address at 549 the store was a one stop shop. A couple of years later the store at 553 Parliament was acquired and housed dog & cat supplies as it does today. In the early ‘90’s the store at 551 was acquired and the walls between were taken down bringing the store to its present look. The store has always had the unique downtown Toronto edge with many colourful employees and customers over the years. The store has also appeared in a number of TV spots, music videos and movies. The Menagerie has also supplied numerous media forms with animals and supplies for commercials, films and television shows like “Once upon a hamster”. We continue to offer rentals for the active film and television community. We have also been an active supporter of the local community with sponsorships and donations to worthwhile youth and charitable organizations. The Menagerie continues to be a recognizable and fun spot to visit on Cabbagetown’s main street. |
